Kew currently accepts it as a distinct species, although Darrell Probst considers it remarkably similar to a stabilised, true-breeding form of E. × youngianum.

The cultivated clone Cc 950046 was introduced by Probst and remains an especially interesting form. It is diminutive, reaching only around 12cm in flower, with a second flush of growth taking it to about 23cm. Rounded leaflets emerge bronzed in spring, later becoming green with attractive maroon flecking. The small white flowers have long spurs reminiscent of E. grandiflorum, but are beautifully proportioned to the plant.

An excellent choice for the front of a woodland border or a shady trough, in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil.
