Barrenwort  Berberidaceae

This is one Epimedium that makes no attempt to hide its ambitions. ‘Red Maximum’ is a Belgian hybrid raised by Koen Van Poucke, from the cross Epimedium grandiflorum ‘Freya’ × E. membranaceum. It is deservedly admired for its unusually deep flower colour and has become one of Van Poucke’s most distinctive introductions.

In spring, numerous wiry stems rise above the bronze-flushed young foliage carrying deep burgundy to crimson-red flowers, each finished with contrasting pale, almost white spur tips. The flowers are produced over a remarkably long period, while the foliage remains evergreen to semi-evergreen, colouring again in autumn.

A vigorous, clump-forming hybrid for partial or full shade, ‘Red Maximum’ is particularly useful beneath trees and shrubs and becomes tolerant of dry shade once established. It has also received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
