Barrenwort 'Pink Champagne' Berberidaceae

One of the more indulgent names in the Epimedium world—and one of the plants that actually deserves it. ‘Pink Champagne’ is an American hybrid raised by Darrell Probst and introduced by Cobblewood in 2007 as Cc. 990618. It has become one of Probst’s best-known introductions, and with good reason.

In spring, upright sprays of flowers rise well above the foliage, combining medium-pink sepals with raspberry-pink petals and pale yellow spur tips. The effect is rather like champagne being poured through a raspberry sorbet—although considerably more useful in a shady border. The elongated evergreen leaflets are handsomely mottled with purple when young, gradually becoming green as the season progresses.

A vigorous, tight-clumping hybrid, it is excellent for woodland planting and dry shade, producing an impressive display once established. The RHS gives it H6 (-20 to -15°C) and an Award of Garden Merit.
