Barrenwort Berberidaceae

One of the more handsome and variable Chinese Epimediums, Epimedium acuminatum earns its name from the distinctly long-pointed leaflets, which are edged with small spines and carried on attractive, often evergreen foliage. In spring, the foliage provides a suitably dramatic backdrop for large, nodding, long-spurred flowers, which may range from yellow and white through rose-purple and violet—a useful reminder that this species is not as colour-consistent in the wild as its name on a nursery label might suggest.

It has a broad distribution across Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou and northern Yunnan, growing in woodland, thickets, bamboo forest and grassy or disturbed slopes from approximately 270–2,400m. Wild populations have been documented around Emei Shan, Baoxing, Ya’an and Yingjing in Sichuan, as well as Nanchuan in Chongqing and several localities in Guizhou.

Several notable cultivated forms originate from wild collections. L575, L1962 ‘Galaxy’ and L1982 ‘Persian Carpet’ were collected by Roy Lancaster, while the species has also been represented by other numbered collections, including Cc 011415.

A vigorous, substantial Epimedium for woodland planting, it appreciates humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil but becomes remarkably tolerant of dry shade once established. Height: 30–45cm. Spread: 45–60cm. Flowering: April–May. Hardiness: H5 (-23 to -15°C).
