Koidzumi's Wood Fern Dryopteridaceae

A rather splendid Japanese wood fern whose new fronds emerge in an almost indecently good shade of coppery-red before maturing to deep, glossy green. Closely related to Dryopteris erythrosora, it was originally described by Japanese pteridologist Motoji Tagawa in 1933 and is now accepted as a distinct species, although D. erythrosora var. koidzumiana remains a synonym.  Native to Yakushima and the northern and central Nansei-shoto (Ryukyu Islands) of Japan, it is essentially a warm-temperate to subtropical woodland fern. 

Best in bright, open shade or gentle morning sun, with humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water during dry spells, particularly while establishing, and protect from harsh drying winds. Evergreen or semi-evergreen in milder climates.
