Frigid Shooting Star Primulaceae

A rare and exquisite Pacific Northwest Shooting Star, Dodecatheon austrofrigidum produces compact rosettes of fresh green leaves from which short stems rise in spring, carrying clusters of nodding, vivid magenta flowers. The swept-back petals reveal a dramatic central column of dark purple stamens and style, giving each flower the appearance of a tiny airborne comet—hence the common name. Naturally restricted to rocky, seasonally moist habitats in south-western Washington and north-western Oregon, it favours cool conditions, often growing among mosses and grasses on rocky slopes and river cliffs.

Formerly placed in Dodecatheon, it is now treated botanically as Primula austrofrigida, although the old name remains firmly entrenched in horticulture.

Best grown in a cool, moisture-retentive but well-drained rock garden or woodland edge, with summer dormancy.
