Disporum longistylum CD & R 2412B
Chinese Fairy Bells Colchicaceae
A superb and statuesque fairy bell, Disporum longistylum CD&R 2412B forms upright, branching stems clothed in elegant, strongly veined foliage. In late spring, clusters of pendulous, creamy-white flowers hang beneath the leaves, followed by handsome black berries. A particularly substantial and architectural Disporum, it makes an excellent companion for ferns and other choice woodland plants.
CD&R 2412B was collected by Cédric Basset and Marion Lennoz and has entered specialist horticulture as a particularly fine form of D. longistylum. The accession has occasionally been distributed under the incorrect name D. megalanthum, but has been confirmed as D. longistylum by Disporum specialist Aaron Floden. We therefore retain the name D. longistylum with confidence.
The collection is recorded as originating in China, reportedly from high-altitude alpine meadow, although we have not located the original field record establishing a precise locality. The species itself occurs in central and south-western China, extending into Tibet and Assam. In cultivation it prefers humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade, with protection from prolonged drought.
An outstanding plant for the woodland garden, combining the quiet elegance of Disporum with enough stature to make a real impression.
