Disporopsis taiwaniana
Disporopsis Ruscaceae
A refined woodland perennial from Taiwan, Disporopsis taiwaniana forms slowly spreading clumps of arching stems clothed in glossy, evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves. In spring, small, pendulous, creamy-white flowers appear beneath the foliage, followed by dark berries. It has the understated elegance typical of the genus and makes an excellent groundcover beneath trees and shrubs.
Native to the montane forests of Taiwan, it favours humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial to full shade. It appreciates reliable moisture during establishment but, once rooted, is surprisingly accommodating. A particularly good companion for ferns and other choice woodland plants.
As with several Disporopsis, the young shoots have been used locally as a vegetable, although this species is principally valued horticulturally rather than as a culinary crop. Its evergreen foliage also gives useful winter structure in sheltered gardens.
