Western Bleeding Hearts Papaveracae

Western Bleeding Heart, bringing a little woodland romance without requiring the woodland to remain permanently damp. Native to the Pacific coast of North America, from British Columbia south through Washington and Oregon to northern California, it occurs in forest, woodland clearings and montane habitats, often in humus-rich soils.

The finely divided, blue-green foliage emerges from creeping rhizomes, producing graceful arching stems of pendent, heart-shaped flowers in shades of pink to rose-red. It is excellent beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where it gradually forms naturalistic colonies. Grow in sun or partial shade, ideally in fertile, humus-rich soil, although it is considerably more adaptable than its delicate appearance suggests.

An especially useful characteristic is its response to summer drought. When water becomes scarce, D. formosa can go dormant early, retreating underground rather than struggling through prolonged water stress. Once moisture returns, established plants bounce back remarkably well, making it a surprisingly resilient choice for gardens experiencing increasingly dry summers. In good conditions it will remain leafy and flowering for longer; in drought, simply let it retreat gracefully rather than reaching for the hose.
