Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Garnet Schist'
Tufted Hair Grass Poaceae
A particularly handsome form of our native-looking Tufted Hair Grass, ‘Garnet Schist’ earns its name from the deep garnet-brown colouring of its extraordinarily abundant flower panicles. Dense clumps of rich green foliage produce a multitude of fine, arching stems from early summer, creating a hazy cloud of flowers that catches beautifully in movement and low light. Selected and introduced by garden designer and plantsman Nigel Dunnett, it was notably showcased at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Unlike many airy grasses, the sheer quantity of its flowerheads gives it real visual weight without sacrificing transparency. It is remarkably adaptable, growing in sun or partial shade and in soils ranging from reasonably dry to moist, although it appreciates reliable moisture during establishment. A superb choice for naturalistic planting, prairie-style borders and alongside perennials where its dark flowerheads provide an excellent contrast.
