Lily-of-the-Valley Asparagaceae

A Lily-of-the-Valley that has clearly decided that green is rather overrated. This spectacular golden-leaved form was selected by Margaret Owen in England as a sport of the handsome variegated ‘Hardwick Hall’, retaining the familiar spreading habit and intensely fragrant white bells while turning the foliage a remarkable rich yellow. The golden colour is best developed in part shade, particularly where the plant is protected from strong midday sun, and the rhizomatous habit makes it an excellent woodland groundcover. The flowers retain all the old-fashioned charm of the species, with that unmistakable perfume, followed by red berries. Give it humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and let it roam — Lily-of-the-Valley is rarely interested in respecting boundaries.
