Cardamine raphanifolia
Greater Cuckoo Flower Brassicaceae
A handsome and slightly underappreciated member of the watercress family, Cardamine raphanifolia is a robust perennial of wet places, native from western and southern Europe through the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula, France and Italy. It produces lush, pinnate foliage and upright stems carrying airy clusters of white to pale lilac flowers in spring and early summer. Found naturally beside streams, springs and wet woodland, it appreciates reliably moist to wet, fertile soil in sun or partial shade. The young leaves are edible, with a fresh, peppery, watercress-like flavour—useful in salads or as a garnish. Height: 30–80cm. Spread: 30–50cm. Flowers: May–July. Hardiness: H5, –15 to –10°C.
