Cardamine quinquefolia
Toothwort Brassicaceae
A charming woodland perennial with a distinctly alpine temperament, Cardamine quinquefolia is native to mountainous regions of southern and southeastern Europe, including the Alps and Carpathians. It forms low, delicate clumps of divided foliage, topped in spring by loose clusters of attractive pale pink flowers. Naturally found in cool, moist, humus-rich soils, it appreciates partial shade and good drainage, particularly beneath deciduous trees or among rocks where it can escape winter wet. A lovely choice for a naturalistic woodland garden—and considerably less demanding than its rather grand name suggests.
