Crinklewood Brassicaceae

A quietly exuberant woodland perennial, Cardamine pentaphyllos (the five-leaved bittercress) behaves as though it can never quite decide whether it is refined groundcover or a small act of botanical overstatement. Native to central and southeastern Europe, including the Balkans and the Carpathians. Each leaf arrives in a neat set of five leaflets, as if the plant is determined to be both orderly and slightly theatrical at the same time. In spring it sends up loose sprays of pale lilac to white flowers that hover above the foliage like polite applause, followed by the characteristic slender seed pods of the genus.

The young leaves are edible, with a mild, peppery bite that feels more like a suggestion than a statement—best used sparingly unless you enjoy your salads with a hint of woodland mischief.

Best grown in cool, humus-rich, reliably moist soil in partial shade, where it will form a relaxed but distinctive ground layer in woodland-style plantings, slowly expanding its fivefold charm.

Height: 30–60cm.

Spread: 30–60cm.

Flowers: April–May.

Hardiness: H5 (–15 to –10°C).
