Brunnera sibirica

Siberian Bugloss Boraginaceae

A delightful Siberian woodland perennial producing clouds of small, vivid sky-blue flowers in spring, held above attractive, heart-shaped foliage. Rather less ubiquitous than Brunnera macrophylla, it deserves a place in the garden for its combination of delicacy and toughness. The flowers have that irresistible forget-me-not quality, but the plant has considerably more substance and presence, making it excellent for shady borders, woodland planting or beneath deciduous trees. Give it a cool, humus-rich soil and it will reward you with a particularly lovely display when much of the woodland garden is just waking up. One of those plants that makes shade look considerably more interesting.
