Begonia shepherdii
Shepherd's Begonia Begoniaceae
A charming and rather unusual tuberous begonia, forming upright, brittle stems with swollen, knobbly bases and attractive maple-like leaves splashed with silvery markings. Small, single white flowers appear in late summer, providing a pleasing contrast to the foliage. The name ‘shepherdii’ is somewhat problematic horticulturally, being an unresolved name rather than a firmly accepted botanical species; plants sold under it are closely associated with Begonia dregei and its hybrids. Best grown in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial or bright shade, sheltered from cold winds. The RHS rates it H1B, so it is best protected from frost and overwintered under cover.
