Athyrium otophorum var. okanum AGM
Eared Lady fern Athyriaceae
A fern that clearly believes shade need not mean sombre. Athyrium otophorum var. okanum is a Japanese variety, recognised by Kew as distinct, and the RHS has awarded it an AGM.
Its broad, arching bipinnate fronds emerge soft yellow-green to almost cream, carried on wonderfully contrasting deep purple-red stalks and midribs. As the season progresses the fronds become greener, while the burgundy framework remains—rather like a Japanese painted fern that has discovered the advantages of a more architectural physique.
A deciduous, clump-forming fern for moist, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil, happiest in dappled or full shade. It is particularly effective planted in groups, where the pale foliage can illuminate a dark woodland border.
