Calico Aster Asteraceae

A particularly handsome form of the North American Calico Aster, with dark foliage and a generous display of small white daisies, each centred with a rather fetching rose-purple disc. The individual flowers are only around 18 mm across, but are produced in clouds along the branching stems, giving the plant an airy, almost frothy appearance in the late-season border. S. lateriflorum is widespread across eastern and central North America, occurring in woodland margins, open woods and other moderately moist habitats, and has been cultivated in Europe for well over two centuries. ‘Bleke Bet’ is a named garden selection, notable for its dark leaves and attractive flower colour, and is considerably more interesting than its diminutive flowers might suggest. A splendid late-season plant for weaving amongst grasses and perennials, while the flowers are much appreciated by bees and other small pollinators. Formerly placed in the huge and unwieldy genus Aster, hence the synonym Aster lateriflorus ‘Bleke Bet’.
