Aster (Symphyotrichum) 'Climax'
Michaelmas Daisy Asteraceae
A proper old-school autumn performer, ‘Climax’ has been brightening borders for at least a century, with a 1927 nursery catalogue already offering it as Aster novi-belgii. Its starry, light-blue flowers with golden-yellow centres make a fine late-season display, particularly when allowed to mingle with ornamental grasses and other autumn-flowering perennials. The name has also been associated with Symphyotrichum laeve, so the precise species identity deserves a little caution; the original raiser remains unconfirmed. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in full sun for the best show, and divide established clumps every few years to maintain vigour. A valuable source of late nectar for bees and other pollinators, this is a vintage garden plant that still knows how to deliver a grand finale.
