Michaelmas Daisy Asteraceae

A rather mysterious old garden aster, and all the better for it. ‘Orpheus’ produces a handsome, upright plant with dark stems and green foliage, eventually carrying masses of intense violet-blue daisies. The contrast between those dark stems and brilliant flowers is quite superb, particularly as the border starts its annual descent into autumnal chaos.

Its precise origins seem to have disappeared somewhere along the way, with no convincing breeder or introduction date turning up in the horticultural literature. Older European sources place ‘Orpheus’ alongside the historic Symphyotrichum laeve cultivar ‘Calliope’ and suggest that both belong to the rather complicated group of garden asters involving S. laeve and S. novi-belgii. So while it is generally sold as S. laeve ‘Orpheus’, we would hesitate to pretend that its parentage is quite so tidy.

And perhaps the mystery is appropriate. Named for the legendary musician who ventured into the Underworld to retrieve Eurydice, ‘Orpheus’ has at least managed to escape with its identity intact — mostly. What is certain is that it is a cracking late-season perennial: robust, upright and far less inclined to collapse into an autumnal heap than many asters. Grow it in full sun and fertile, moisture-retentive soil, preferably among grasses where its dark stems and violet flowers can do their thing. A fine late source of nectar for bees and other insects.
