Aster (Symphyotrichum) 'Herfstweelde'

Aster

'Herfstweelde' Asteraceae

Why settle for an autumn border when you can have autumn wealth? The name ‘Herfstweelde’ translates from Dutch as just that, and this superb aster certainly delivers, smothering its branching stems in clouds of luminous pale lavender-blue flowers from late summer well into autumn. Bred by Dutch plantsman and garden designer Piet Oudolf at his nursery De Koesterd, it has become a particularly useful plant for naturalistic and prairie-style planting. Its airy habit and fine foliage give it movement rather than bulk, while the late flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for bees and butterflies. A genuine Oudolf classic—and an aster that earns its keep long after summer has packed its bags.
