Galatella sedifolia 'Jean Polignier'
Stonecrop Aster Asteraceae
A little late-season star that doesn’t need to shout to be noticed! ‘Jean Polignier’ produces clouds of delicate lilac-blue, daisy-like flowers above fine, narrow foliage, bringing a welcome touch of colour to the garden just as summer begins to pack its bags. Its airy habit makes it a lovely partner for ornamental grasses and other late-flowering perennials, while its understated charm is ideal for naturalistic planting and sunny, well-drained borders.
The nomenclature comes with a small botanical plot twist. The plant is also circulated under the older name Aster sedifolius ‘Jean Polignier’, reflecting the changing generic placement of this group of asters. The specific epithet sedifolia refers to its stonecrop-like foliage. The name ‘Jean Polignier’ appears in European horticultural records, but its namesake remains elusive. Intriguingly, the German nursery of Ewald Hügin has also recorded a Delosperma associated with Jean Polignier, suggesting a possible wider connection with plant collecting or distribution. However, his identity and the original introduction of this particular selection remain unverified.
Give it full sun and well-drained soil, and let its fine texture and late flowers earn their keep. A useful little perennial for extending the season without adding visual bulk — proof that not every autumn star needs to be a giant.
