Why have a flower when you can have a botanical exclamation mark? Angelica gigas is one of the great architectural umbellifers, producing imposing reddish-purple stems topped with dense domes of deep plum-purple flowers in late summer and early autumn. Native to Korea, Japan and China, it brings height, drama and a wonderfully dark note to the border just when many other perennials are beginning to fade. 

The flowers are also a superb resource for pollinating insects, attracting bees and other nectar-loving visitors, and it is included on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list. Usually short-lived, it obligingly sets seed, making it ideal for naturalistic and wildlife planting. A magnificent plant for adding structure, atmosphere and a touch of botanical theatre.
