Allium thunbergii ‘Ozawa’
Japanese Onion Amaryllidaceae
Why settle for an allium that clocks off in summer? ‘Ozawa’ saves its best performance for autumn, producing a succession of rich purple flowers just when many other perennials are beginning to pack up for winter. Forming neat clumps of slender, semi-evergreen foliage, it is a particularly useful little plant for the front of borders, gravel gardens and containers. The leaves have a mild onion flavour and are edible, although its real value is as an ornamental plant that provides colour late in the season. Compact, tough and agreeably unfussy, ‘Ozawa’ proves that the allium season needn’t end with summer.
