Chinese Chives Amaryllidaceae

Cheerfully edible and faintly mischievous, Allium ramosum (often called garlic chives) is the sort of plant that turns up uninvited in the kitchen and is immediately forgiven. Its slender, grass-like leaves carry a gentle garlic-onion warmth, perfect for dumplings, stir-fries and anything that benefits from a quiet culinary nudge. In summer it sends up airy umbels of starry white flowers, equally edible and adored by pollinators who arrive as if they’ve been tipped off. Tough, reliable and happily perennial, it forms slowly expanding clumps that ask for little more than sun and decent drainage, rewarding neglect with increasing generosity. Height 30–60cm; spread 30–45cm.
