Why grow an onion that merely makes onions when you can grow one that makes them upstairs? ‘Proliferum Group’, the Tree Onion, produces edible bulbils in clusters at the top of its stems, rather ingeniously eliminating the tiresome business of digging around for them. The hollow leaves, underground bulbs and aerial bulbils are all edible, with the latter particularly useful for pickling or planting out to produce yet more onions. As the bulbils mature, the stems can bend to the ground and root, giving rise to its other name, Walking Onion. Productive, perennial and gloriously eccentric—an onion that has clearly discovered vertical farming.
